So today when I was picking up milk, I got in a discussion with a lady who was in line in front of me. We were in Fairplay and she was talking about things being tight. Her husband had just gotten laid off and she was struggling to pay bills let alone groceries. I started to tell her about how I save alot by shopping the sales and shopping may stores like Jewel. She responded that Jewel was too expensive. In fact I had a similar conversation a week or so ago with my grandmother.
I told them that sometimes it is more beneficial for me to shop at Jewel, even with their higher prices. I don't pay the higher prices myself and when trying to get my total up for a spend $XX and get $XX OYNO (on your next order) it actually benefits me that they charge so much. Add to this that I can stack store AND manufacturer coupons AND even use the Register Rewards (RR) that I get at Walgreens.
Walgreens is your friend if you are in the Jewel/Osco area. Every week (including tomorrow) I shop at Walgreens for what my family uses or sometimes things to donate. Alot of the things that I am buying have register rewards attached.
For example, tomorrow I will be buying some Colgate Total toothpaste. It is on sale for $2.99 (thats a sale?) and you get a $2.99 Register Reward. I happen to have a $1/1 Walgreens coupon AND a $1/1 manufacturer coupon that I can use. So I will pay $.99 (plus tax) and get a $2.99 register reward (I will have made $2 on that purchase) that I will take to Jewel (I use these for things that I may not have coupons for like milk, meat, organics etc.). The register rewards usually have about 2 weeks until they expire so I will try and wait until Jewel has a great sale on something I need along with other manufacturer and store coupons.
Also while your shopping build you stockpile. Have enough to last a few months (non perishables/frozen) or to get you through to the next sale. When you don't pay full price for the things you use daily you will save a ton over the long run.
*Hint to those new to Walgreens. When buying an item that has a register reward attached to it make sure you only buy the amount needed for the register reward PER TRANSACTION. Like my Colgate example I have 2 of each of the store and manufacturer coupons so I will make sure that split up my colgate purchases so I do 1 each transaction. I will also add some more free after register reward deals because you can only use as many coupons as you have items. That means even though I can stack a store and a manufacturer coupon, I still need another item (that I don't have a coupon for, aka a filler) in order to get my total savings. I can NOT use the 1st RR from colgate to pay for the second colgate and get the RR for the second one.
