Craigslist for Dummys

With all the headlines in the media about the scammers/criminals on sites like Craigslist many people have been scared away. There are however, many deals to be had you just need to be a savvy consumer and use common sense. I have had many successes on craigslist. My last two apartments, furniture and jobs are all benefits I have gotten through that site. I do have rules I follow to make the experience safe and worthwhile.

1. I don't buy high ticket items through the site. Things like Diamond Rings and Big Screen TV's should be purchased elsewhere (like a pawnshop, garage sales or retail stores). Any transaction that has you bringing a boatload of cash to make the deal should be considered suspect. Now the odds are that some of them are legit, but do you really want to take the chance to see if you got lucky.

2. Electronics and Gaming Consoles are a no-no. Alot of these tend to be stolen, or banned from gaming networks. While it may be a great deal, again not something I want to take a chance on.

3. If you are going to make a transaction, let people know. Let your friends know where you are going, what you are buying. If something happens (heaven forbid) at least someone will know where you were supposed to be.

4. Bring friends with you. Have someone that will go inside with you while you make the deal as well as someone outside who can call for help if necessary.

5. IF IT SOUNDS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE IT PROBABLY IS!!!

I follow these rules and have yet to have a bad craigslist experience. What rules do you have for craigslist?
